Because grapes have a chemical balance that allows them to ferment naturally without adding acids, sugars or enzymes, they are "just wine". The fact that non-grape wines are labeled "wine" is more due to their higher alcohol content than beer and not due to how they were made.

When crushed grapes are fermented with yeast, wine is created. The yeast converts sugar from grapes into alcohol. The style and type of wine being made will determine the yeast type used. Different ingredients can produce strikingly different wines.

Etymologically, the word wine derives its name from several proto-European sources, including the proto Germanic word "winam" as well as the proto Indo European word "wino". Although there are many sources that cite similar labels across the Eurasian landscape, the Latin root for the word, "vinum", is most likely a derivation from one of these older words.
